Companies make beeline to build 1144 toilets in govt schools

Hyderabad: Major corporate companies in Telangana are making a beeline for constructing toilets in government schools under the Swachh Vidyalaya programme initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Currently, the government schools in the State require 9,999 new toilets. Many PSUs and corporate companies have come forward to build 1,144 new toilets under the corporate social responsibility.

Companies like Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited, Tata Communication Services and Wipro have already submitted their proposals to the Department of School Education expressing their intent to build toilets. According to an official of in the Department of School Education, each toilet would cost Rs 1.25 lakh. “Each boy’s washroom will have one lavatory and four urinals and girl’s toilet will have four lavatories,” an official added.

Besides building new toilets, the corporates have also expressed their willingness to take up works in schools which have dysfunctional toilets. While there are 10,571 non-functional toilets in the schools, the corporate companies will take up work in about 2,713 non-functional toilets. Over the years, the toilets in several schools remained dysfunctional due to the lack of maintenance and water facility.

To maintain the toilets, each school requires about Rs 3000 per month, but the government had given them only Rs 300. While the School Education Department placed a proposal of Rs 100 crore for the maintenance in the budget, the government did not allocate a penny towards it. According to the estimates of the Department of School Education, 5,400 government schools do not have water facility. While the corporate have come up for building toilets, they are now apprehensive that their work may go in vain with the lack of maintenance.

“We are in talks with the government for grants to maintain toilets in the schools,” said a senior of the department. While Modi wanted to ensure toilets in all schools by August 15, 2015, the Telangana government is planning to complete prior to it. “We have chalked out an action plan for constructing toilets. The work will be completed in all the schools by June 30,” said T Chiranjeevulu, Commissioner and Director, Department of School Education.
