Karimnagar: Renowned social reformer Jyotiba Phule’s 189th birth anniversary was celebrated on grand scale across the district on Saturday. People from different sections garlanded the statues of Phule and recollected the services of late social reformer rendered for the change of the society.

Participating in a programme organised by the district administration at Bypass Road here, Finance Minister Eatala Rajender said development of the nation was not possible unless and until the caste system was abolished from the society.
Recalling pioneering struggle made by Phule against caste system and Brahmanism, he applauded the services of late leader for the betterment of the society. The Minister assured to install the statue of Savitribai Phule, wife of Jyotibha Phule, in the district headquarters.
Assuring to complete all the buildings, the Minister informed construction of Phule Bhavan in Karimnagar town. The State government was committed for the upliftment of downtrodden sections, he said.
Local MP B Vinod Kumar observed that there was no wrong in extending reservations for another 100 years. Phule always struggled for the change in the society. Stating that there was no caste system in the Europe, Vinod Kumar said superstitions among the people were the main reason for the practice of caste system. He called for eradication of such an evil from the society.
