SITCO'S DECISION

Khammam: The decision taken by South India Transport Council (SITCO) on usage of vehicles run by educational institutions is going to affect many private educational institutions here in Khammam district.

At a meeting held recently at Goa (Panaji), SITCO restricted the usage age of vehicles run by educational institutions to 8 years, following National Green Tribunal's (NGT) ban on diesel vehicles older than 10 years. This decision was taken as a lot of vehicles which are plying on the road are very old and causing pollution and accidents.

In Khammam district, there are nearly 500 private educational institutions which are dependent on more than 300 vehicles for bringing the students to the school from their houses. And out of these 300 vehicles, more than 100 vehicles are in usage from more than 10 years.

The management of the private schools are of the opinion that if the new decision is implemented, many vehicles of the private schools will be of no use and to buy new vehicles, they need to spend more money. This may compel them to increase the school fee which will be a burden on parents.

Managements of some schools opined that they may have to close the schools as they are not in a position to buy new buses. However, the academics and experts of transport sector welcomed the decision as it would ensure safety of students. They said the drivers must be trained properly and should be committed to their profession.
