About 51,000 poultry birds were culled and 8,900 eggs were destroyed on Wednesday in Thorrur village of Hayathnagar mandal. According to State Animal Husbandry Department officials, culling and burying of birds was confined to the five farms of Thorrur village and the culling operation will continue. The birds are being buried within the farms of individual poultry farmers.

Hyderabad: About 51,000 poultry birds were culled and 8,900 eggs were destroyed on Wednesday in Thorrur village of Hayathnagar mandal. According to State Animal Husbandry Department officials, culling and burying of birds was confined to the five farms of Thorrur village and the culling operation will continue. The birds are being buried within the farms of individual poultry farmers.

Five teams, each led by a veterinary doctor, are working in the ‘Infection Zone’, which falls within one kilometre radius of Thorrur. The Joint Director of Animal Husbandry Department, Varaprasad Reddy told reporters that the culling operation was proceeding smoothly and might well get extended to Thursday. “No glitches were encountered in operations so far,” he said.

Six survey teams are working in the 18 villages that fall under the Surveillance Zone (zone falling within a radius of 10 kilometer from Thorrur village). Of them, 17 villages fall under Hayathnagar mandal and one village falls under Saroornagar mandal in Ranga Reddy district. As per data available with the department, a total of 8 lakh poultry birds that are being farmed in the 18 villages are under surveillance.

Simultaneously, 36 Disinfection and Sanitation Teams were working in these villages and they comprise of personnel from the veterinary department, Assistant Director (Epidemiology) in the state Animal Husbandry department Dr Shakil Ahmed told The Hans India.

Also, the state Health and Medical Department officials have supplied Tamiflu tablets to the personnel working in the poultry farms and to the veterinary personnel, who take part in the control and mitigation operations. Distribution of tablets was taken up by Ranga Reddy District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO).
