Nizamabad: The State government decided to stop illegal sand mining at rivers and brooks and set up eight government sand quarries in Nizamabad district.The gram panchayat secretaries supervise the sand transportation and supply the sand for needy people for construction work at Rs 100 for cubic metre. The Nizamabad district administration on Thursday said that private persons illegally ferry the sand from various river basins, damaging the roads. It is leading to diminishing of ground water levels.

District officials decided to prevent the private sand contractors, who procure licences on the name of private patta lands and resort to illegally digging in river boundaries. On Thursday, District Collector D Ronald Rose conducted a meeting with the Telangana State Mineral Development Corporation officials and framed a sand policy. On the occasion, the Collector said the government is launching eight government sand quarries at Mailaram, PeddaValgot, Kolipak, Nizampoor, Bada Bheemgal, Neela, Pothangal, Pegadapalli.

The Collector said the gram panchayat secretary operate and supervise the quarries. He said the people who require persons should pay Rs 100 per cubic metre and these quarries would operate between 8 am and 5 pm, he added. The Collector also said instead of these quarries few other quarries also operate the village committees to facilitate the local people in various mandals.
