Even though, the number of cardio related cases account for a mere eight per cent out of all diseases treated under the scheme , treatment for cardiovascular surgeries eat away into the majority of the funds under the scheme.

Hyderabad: Treatment for heart related ailments continues to be a costly affair in both Telangana and AP states under the Rajiv Aarogyasri Community Health Insurance Scheme (RACHIS) . Even though, the number of cardio related cases account for a mere eight per cent out of all diseases treated under the scheme , treatment for cardiovascular surgeries eat away into the majority of the funds under the scheme.

About 21 per cent of the total expenditure was borne alone from the heart surgeries under Rajiv Arogyasri, followed by injuries ( 19 per cent), digestive diseases (12 per cent) and 11 per cent funds were being spent for musculoskeletal treatment. Interestingly, injuries accounted 31 per cent out of all diseases treated under the scheme and the number of digestive diseases treated were 17 per cent.

A study conducted by Delhi based organization, The George Institute – for global health said that a total of 6,77,332 surgical admissions ( 80 per cent at private hospital) were recorded since 2008. This does not include cataract and caesarean sections. Males accounted for 56 per cent of the admissions. The finding revealed that “even when free or subsidized access to surgery was made available by the state, allied costs make utilization difficult.”
