Kicking off the 15-km Padayatra from Koritical village in Adilabad district, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Friday is said to tour villages where a number of suicides took place due to the agrarian distress.

To highlight the problems faced by farmers, the 44-year-old Amethi MP visited the family of Velma Rajeshwar, who committed suicide due to debt burden. He also visited another farmer’s family and handed over a cheque of Rs 1 lakh.

The Padayatra will continue through Vadial, Rachapur, Pottupalli and Laxmanchanda in Laxmanchanda mandal. Rahul Gandhi’s visit and the padayatra would instill confidence among the farmers said the Telangana Congress leaders.

However, the opposition parties - TDP and BJP alleged that ever since the TRS Government assumed office in June last year, hundreds of farmers have committed suicide due to the agrarian distress in the state. TRS responded to the allegations by stating that the Congress should not play politics on farmer issues.

Rahul Gandhi earlier visited Maharashtra and Punjab undertaking padayatras, interacting with farmers.
