Hyderabad: Visitors thronging various historic landmarks in twin-cities have reasons to rejoice. All these days, the scenic beauty and eye-pleasing environs at such locations captivated them leaving a lasting memory in their minds. However, from June onwards, people could avail high-speed internet facilities, courtesy of innovative steps being taken up by Telangana Government.

Charminar, Golconda Fort, Salarjung Museum, Birla Mandir, Shilparamam and Koti Bus Stand are some of the major locations that are on government plan for extending free Wi-Fi facilities. Plans are afoot to launch this service, coinciding with Telangana Formation Day festivities set to be held from June 2 to 7. Several Wi-Fi hotspots are being set up to enable users enjoy uninterrupted and high-speed internet services

It may be mentioned here that Telangana government, in collaboration with BSNL and Quadgen Wireless Solutions, are working on this ambitious project. This is part of government’s initiative to make Hyderabad as Wi-Fi enabled city by the end of the year. The city of pearls, as it is called, will get the tag of first city in the country to boast full Wi-Fi connectivity once this project gets completed.

As part of this initiative, IT Minister K Tarakarama Rao inaugurated a pilot Wi-Fi project covering the Tank Bund stretch of 5 to 6 kilometres on April 16. People in the vicinity of Tank Bund, NTR Marg and Necklace Road were availing this service (having speeds upto 20 Mbps) ever since.

While users were given free surfing facility for 30 minutes (each day), those who wished to connect for extended periods were given the choice of recharging by prepaid coupons. This same method will be extended even to the new locations. The first 30 minutes would be free, while users need to make use of recharge coupons for extended browsing.

According to Quadgen representatives, the Wi-Fi service around Tank Bund was doing well with net traffic, ranging from 2000 to 3000 users, during weekends. Downloads were calculated to be 40 GB and uploads 12 GB during Saturdays and Sundays when residents would be flocking Tank Bund and surrounding areas.

When asked about any shortcomings or complaints received thus far, the wireless solutions company staff replied in negative. They suggested users to stay stationery at one point and avail the services instead of logging in while on the move. Essentially, Wi-Fi is a stationery technology, which would offer best results only when the user availed it while being stationed at a point.
