Hyderabad: Telangana Deputy Chief Minister and Education Minister Kadiyam Srihari informed that the government had released Rs 140.75 crore for strengthening government junior colleges in the State. Speaking to newspersons at Telangana Secretariat here on Saturday, the Minister said the amount was released under Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) and would be utilised for constructing new buildings, toilets, additional class rooms, laboratories and installation of reverse osmosis plants in 402 government junior colleges.


Kadiyam said that of 402 government junior colleges, 332 colleges had own buildings and 70 colleges did not have own buildings. About 15 colleges did not have land and these colleges were functioning from the school premises, he said. Under the RIDF 20, 26 colleges were sanctioned Rs 58.30 crore and each college would receive Rs 2.25 crore for the development works. Construction work of 70 college buildings would be completed in a year.


“The government has taken a decision to place the rest of the colleges under RIDF 21. The district collectors will be asked to look out for the land for 15 colleges and hand over the same to intermediate education board,” he informed. The Education Minister said there was a need for additional cases and laboratories in 69 colleges and about Rs 50.25 crore was sanctioned under RIDF and the amount would be released soon. Similarly, Rs 2.65 crore would be released for construction of compound walls in 33 colleges, he added.


Under Swachh Telangana and Swachh Paatashala programme, Rs 17.32 crore was released for constructing separate toilets for girls and boys and reverse osmosis plants in 173 junior colleges. “All educational institutions should have toilets, water and power supply and sheds for kitchen. We have identified them under Swachh Paatashala and funds were pooled and collectors were directed to take up the work,” the Minister said.

He added that all works would be done by the engineering wing of social welfare department. “All the works will be monitored by a committee headed by the district collector,” Kadiyam said. On the regularisation of the contract workers in junior colleges, the Minister said the legal department was studying the proposal. He informed that there were about 600 vacant posts other than contract workers.
