Hyderabad: It’s not just the academic institutions, but also the blood banks in the City that eagerly await the students to return or join their respective colleges. Since most of the Red Ribbon clubs, representing college going students, are active only during the academic year, the blood banks crave for their return.

Even though, the students can donate blood during the summer holidays, but their stimulus comes from their peers during the academic year. The peer pressure encourages a young student to donate blood. Hence, they turn up in hoards during blood donation camps and most of their names are listed in the nearest blood bank, with blood groups.

According to health officials, the blood stocks drop drastically during the summer, as colleges will have holidays. The students being the prime source of blood donation, they rarely turn up for donating it. There are about 2,000 clubs and youth organisations in the City.

About 78 per cent of the blood comes from Red Ribbon clubs, which are known for donating blood. The members of these clubs gather in colleges and Universities, which are closed during the peak summers, affecting the source of blood. More over the source being youth, during the summer they return to their homes and rarely represent a group.

They are scattered everywhere with less communication with their peers. The blood storage is reduced to minimal quantity. At least 20 to 30 per cent of the blood donations are affected. “Blood donation camps help store blood during last month of the academic year, reducing the affect to its minimum.

Blood is stored in advance, keeping in view of the changing trend during the summers by organising blood donation camps. This covers at least one month. Voluntary blood donation drives are also organised”, says Dr Ram Mohan, APSACS. Given the life of blood is 30 days, the requirement is endless. Moreover, if decease like dengue spreads, the requirement may not match supply, affecting the normal prices.
