Aggrieved students meet Agriculture Minister, say agriculture graduates snatching away their employment

Hyderabad: Horticulture graduates and post-graduates of Prof Jayasankar Telangana State Agricultural University (PJTSU) are crying foul over the Agriculture graduates eyeing at their posts. A group of aggrieved graduates presented a memorandum to State Agriculture Minister Pocharam Srinivasa Reddy on the sidelines of the Zonal Research and Extension Advisory Council meeting held at the Konda Laxman Telangana Sate Horticulture University, Rajendranagar.

They requested him to allocate a fixed percentage of posts to Horticulture graduates in the forthcoming recruitment by the Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC). Members of the Telangana Horticulture Graduates Association said that horticulture was one the emerging sectors within agriculture and its contribution to the state Domestic Product was 17 per cent.

According to K Kiran Kumar, a postgraduate in Horticulture, as many as 1,500 horticulture graduates and 50 diploma holders are waiting for employment in the State. Whatever little number of posts was available were being taken away by the Agriculture graduates and post graduates.

“For example, the current Director of APMIP (AP Micro Irrigation Project) is a PG in Agriculture, although the post is for a qualified Horticulturist,” another member of the association said. Horticulture Officer (HO) posts and Horticulture Extension Officer (HEO) posts were going to Agriculture graduates, they alleged.

Also, there is one HO to farmers of six to seven mandals. Horticulture graduates are demanding that the government appoint one HO and three HEOs to each mandal from now onwards, as horticulture is growing with each passing year. If this is done, 350 graduates could get posts of HOs and another 500 graduates could get HEO posts, Kiran Kumar said.

Further, 120 BSc (Horticulture) graduates, 25 PGs and 60 diploma holders are passing out every year. Responding to their memorandum, Minister Srinivasa Reddy said Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao had broached this issue at the Nagarjuna Sagar Orientation programme a month ago and is favourable to their demand.
