POLICE BRUTALITY

Hyderabad: Vasu Mallapuram, a non-resident Indian (NRI) from Ireland, on Monday, approached State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) and complained of the “brutal treatment” meted out to him by the police under Musheerabad police station.

Vasu appealed the SHRC to conduct an inquiry into the police brutality. “I and my friends, Nitin, Nirish and Preetam, were harshly kicked around and beaten by the policemen on the night of June 25 while we were returning from a party that was organised near Musheerabad crossroads,” he said in the petition.

He described the action on the part of the police as deplorable. Narrating the sequence of events, he said that police had stopped him and his friends near Lakshmi Anusha apartment. The policemen, numbering between 10 and 15, in a drunken state had abused them in filthy terms. “When we questioned them, they started beating us with rubber sticks and bashed us as they liked,” the petitioner said.

The police, he said, had also threatened to kill him and his friends in custody if they dared to complain against them to anyone and demanded Rs 3 lakh to settle the case. “Only after depositing our mobile phones with the sub-inspector Sampath and agreed to pay money, they allowed us to go home,” he pointed out.

Vasu submitted to the SHRC that the doctors at Gandhi Hospital had refused to provide medical aid to him and asked to get a requisition letter from the Musheerabad police station.

He requested the SHRC to ensure that he is admitted in a hospital and medical aid is provided to him. He appealed to the SHRC to see that such violation of human rights does not repeat. He said his health was deteriorating because of the assault by the policemen on him.
