Hyderabad: The Osmania University (OU) teachers who were supposed to be busy with classes and research work are in the protesting mode thanks to indifferent attitude of the Telangana government over resolving universities issues. In accordance to the call given by Telangana State Federation of University Teachers’ Associations, the university teachers staged a dharna at the University administration building here on Friday.
The protesting teachers demanded the government to immediately appoint regular vice-chancellors to all the state universities. They also wanted the government to appoint executive council as none of State universities have one to take decisions related to university administration.
Besides, they also demanded the government to enhance the age of superannuation of the teachers to 65. “About 40 teachers retired last year and 50 are in the line this year. In order to arrest the issue, the government should increase the retirement age to 65,” said Battu Satyanarayana, president, Telangana State Federation of University Teachers’ Associations and Osmania University Teachers Association.
Prof. M Kondandaram urged the government to concentrate on the universities issues. “Due to lack of regular VCs, administration was badly affected. Besides, huge numbers of teachers are retiring every year. This will likely to have its impact on the grading by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) may be affected due to it. If NAAC grade is lowered, grants from the University Grants Commission may not be up to the mark,” he said.
Kondandaram further said despite these prevailing issues in OU, India-Today survey has rated OU as number one among the State universities across the country. “If faculty and more facilities are provided to the university, OU will turn into a world class university,” he opined.
OUTA former president Purshotham Reddy said that it was the OUTA which launched the TRS into the orbit and it was fine tuned by Prof. M Kodandaram. “Unless we do not exert pressure on the government, our demands will not be met,” he added.
