Hyderabad: The Telangana government which had failed to resolve the ongoing nine-day-old strike of the municipal employees has now resorted to threatening them with stringent action and take to alternative measures like deploying army and police if the workers continue their strike.
Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao who held a meeting with Labour Minister Naini Narsimha Reddy, Transport Minister P Mahender Reddy, Commercial Tax Minister Talasani Srinivas Reddy and other officials said that the government was sympathetic to their demands but would consider them after they call of the strike.
KCR was of the opinion that the employees were being misled by some trade union leaders. He called upon the workers to join duty by Monday evening. The Chief Minister said that since outsourcing employees are not employees of the corporation, they must offer services, else they will be replaced.
The Government will consider their demand for salary hike and others after a discussion with officials only when they resume duties taking in to consideration Ramzan and other festivals. The municipal JAC including seven unions like CITU, FTU, BMS, HMS, IFTU, and AITUC after a meeting on Monday evening decided to intensify the strike. They said the workers would not bow before such pressures.
From Tuesday they will burn the effigies of CM at all zonal offices and district head offices. They said, "The CM is following undemocratic methods and is trying to threaten the municipal workers. Tense situation prevailed at the municipal commissioner's meeting in Harihara Kalabhavan when the municipal workers openly lambasted him. Eggs were hurled at GHMEU president U Gopal in the LB Nagar circle when he went to convince the workers to call off the strike.
At one stage, the sanitation workers almost manhandled him. A few woman workers also threw garbage on roads to register their protest at some places in the city. Meanwhile, relay hunger strikes were held at all zonal offices in the GHMC limits. The Municipal JAC has submitted a memorandum at the Ambedkar statue near Tank Bund and a semi nude protest was held by the BMS union at GHMC head office building. Anti government and anti Commissioner slogans were raised at all municipal offices in the corporation.
