To move court if the State government does not take opinion of all Opposition parties

Hyderabad: The Congress has taken a strong stand against the State government’s decision to change the design of Pranahita-Chevella without consultation. Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) has on Thursday decided to fight it out by launching a campaign and approaching court, if the government did not consider opinions of Opposition parties by inviting an all-party meeting or calling an Assembly session.

The TPCC leadership held an awareness meeting by inviting experts including Nainala Govardhan, convenor, Jala Sadhana Samithi, Venkata Ranga Reddy, former Engineer-in-Chief (Irrigation) and D Narsimha Reddy, noted environmentalist. The programme was attended by TPCC president N Uttam Kumar Reddy, Leader of Opposition in Assembly K Jana Reddy, Leader of Opposition in Legislative Council Mohammed Ali Shabbir, party senior leader P Sudershan Reddy, former ministers P Sabitha Indra Reddy, D K Aruna and others.

Later briefing the media persons, chief official spokesperson Dasoju Sravan said the party had taken a decision to strongly oppose any move by the government to take up the project from Kaleshwaram. Putting a direct question, he asked why the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) did not suggest change of design, while demanding national status during elections. “What is the need to shift the project, when it can provide water for 150 kms with gravity?” he asked.

The TRS government, which had initiated various projects, completely abandoned the incomplete projects taken up by the Congress. The government failed to form an expert committee on change of design, even though the project had got CWC (Central Water Commission) clearance for taking up from Tummuddi Hatti, he said. “We believe that the VAPCO, which has now come up with a different report on same project, is in nexus with the ruling party,” Sravan alleged.

According to local leaders, who had visited the site, the change of design will provide water to reservoirs in two constituencies, Pamulaparti reservoir, Gajwel and Tadikapalli reservoir, Siddipet. These constituencies are represented by Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao and his nephew Minister T Harish Rao. “The change in design will surely favour both at the cost of the population in seven districts,” said Sravan.
