Hyderabad: Though the Telangana State government is determined to tackle the human trafficking effectively, the Anti-Human Trafficking Units (AHTUs) do not seem to be functioning in a holistic manner. Only three units in Karimnagar, Warangal and the Women Protection Cell in Hyderabad are making determined efforts to curb the human trafficking, particularly the women.

The non-governmental agencies, fighting the dreaded menace, have pointed gaps in operation launched by the government. Out of total 10 districts in the State, the AHTUs exist only in three districts. Khammam and Nizamabad are considered to be most vulnerable districts and most of the human trafficking is said to be taking place there. But there are no AHTUs in these places.

In response to The Hans India query, the Additional Director General of Police (CID) A Satyanarayan said the Department had sent a proposal to the State government for setting up AHTUs in each district. The government in the united Andhra Pradesh had failed to take steps to establish AHTUs in all the districts, though the higher officials made the proposals time and again.

“The AHTU, which is directly under the Crime Investigation Department (CID), is not using force effectively to tackle the menace. There are teams across the State. But reports have it that women are still being pushed into flesh trade,” according to an office-bearer of a city-based NGO.

Going by statistics, as many as 423 cases of trafficking were registered so far and around 646 victims were rescued, including 31 minors. “So far we have arrested 715 traffickers and 325 customers,” Satyanarayan said. The Department is ready to provide help and support if anyone from the society came forward and alerted the police about the illegal trade.

The operation rescue of victims of human trafficking and arresting of traffickers is not as effective as it should be because of lack of units in several districts and absence of coordination between various departments. The operation could be more effective if there is coordination between departments, like women and Child Welfare and Labour Welfare Department and the police.
