Hyderabad: Any repair to the Osmania General Hospital building may extend life span not more than five years, observed JNTU in its report, after conducting inspection of the IP Block for structural stability. The inspection was taken up under the supervision of Dr N V Ramana Rao, ex-Registrar, JNTU-Hyderabad (Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University), after a portion of the ceiling has fallen down in the first floor MS IV Ward (Heritage Block) in March end.

It held that the roof surface was severely cracked leading to penetration of water into the slab. The wooden runners had deteriorated and yielded. Due to low tensile strength of wood, such yielding in the wood may lead to sudden collapse without warning, it stated. Besides this, the seepages have taken its toll not only on the roof but also on the wood supporting them.

Growth of vegetation is observed at many places leading to cracks in roof, while the bottom reinforcement of the roof slab in the building is badly corroded, the report says. “As the hospital is a heritage structure, approval of the heritage committee should be taken before carrying out any repairs,” the university said.
