Hyderabad: In a major shock to Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, the Centre has rejected inclusion of his home town Siddipet of Medak district in the ambitiously-carved Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme. The rejection comes on a technical ground—the town has less than one lakh population, a stipulation for inclusion in the scheme.

This parameter is being seriously contested by the state government, which is rather upset with the body-blow that has been dealt by the Union Urban Development Ministry. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Amrut city project with an outlay of Rs 20,000 crore for developing basic infrastructure and drinking water supply in 500 select towns in the country.

Following the announcement, the TS government forwarded a list 15 towns seeking Central assistance under the scheme. Under the project, the Union government will release the required funds to municipalities based on the project reports submitted every year. Development of road network, drinking water facility, power supply and solid waste management will be given top priority in the promotion of Amrut cities.

The officials of the state Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) Department told The Hans India that Siddipet was among the four towns (out of 15 towns in Telangana) -- Jagityal (Karimnagar district), Kothagudem ( Khammam) and Manchiryal (Adilabad ), which were denied inclusion in the scheme.

Disputing the contention that the town did not have one lakh population as per the 2011 Census, officials said the population of Siddipet town after the merger of surrounding villages is 1.11 lakh. However, this was not published in the gazette and official records show the population as 95000, which is the population of Soddipet town before merger of the villages. The fate of the three other towns was also hanging in balance for the same reason.

Meanwhile, on the instructions of the Chief Minister, the department is preparing a detailed note explaining the necessity of giving Siddipet an Amrut city status after taking into account the town’s merger with adjoining villages. The letter will be sent to the Union Ministry in the next 10 days, according to a senior MAUD official.

The 11 towns selected as Amrut cities in Telangana include Warangal, Karimnagar, Ramagundam, Khammam, Adilabad, Nizamabad, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Miryalaguda , Mahbubnagar and Hyderabad.
