Hyderabad: Finding itself in a hapless situation as the Karnataka government is going ahead with constructing several minor barrages across Krishna and Bhima rivers obstructing the flow of water to downstream states and with no controlling mechanism in place, the Telangana government has now decided to register its strong protest with the Centre and if necessary take to legal battle.

According to Telangana irrigation officials, Karnataka which had already constructed about several road-cum-bridges to divert Krishna and Bhima waters has now started construction of another gated barrage on the upstream of confluence of Krishna and Bhima rivers near Girijapur village in Raichur district in Karnataka.

It has also decided to increase the height of the Almatti dam from the present 519 metres to 524.26 (1720 ft) to utilise further quantum of 54 tmc. In view of this, the Telangana government constituted a fact finding committee headed by Priyadarshini – Jurala projects Superintendent Engineer (SE) Khagendar who in his report said that Karnataka government has taken up the project three km above the confluence of Krishna and Bhima rivers.

The committee found the capacity of the reservoir of the barrage ( with the length of 1170 metres and 194 gates) was 2 TMC. It is learnt that the project was taken up by Karnataka Power Corporation to supply water for Raichur thermal power plant. The contract works were awarded to Raghu Infra Private Limited on July 27 and the works will be completed in 24 months.

The committee said the barrage would affect Krishna inflows in Telangana, particularly obstruct inflows into Jurala project and Narayanapur projects. Taking serious note of it, Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao asked Principal Secretary to Irrigation SK Joshi and state Advisor (Irrigation) K Vidyasagar Rao to file a petition before Central Water Commission (CWC) and also bring the issue to the notice of Union minister for Water Resources Uma Bharati and mount pressure on the Centre.

The minister urged the TRS Parliamentary Party leader AP Jitendar Reddy to meet all Central government officials and ensure the construction of the dam is stopped immediately.
