Hyderabad: Telangana Voluntary and Health Workers (ASHA) Union, affiliated to the Centre of Indian Trade Union (CITU), has decided to launch an indefinite strike throughout the State from Wednesday. According to them, around 25,000 Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) workers in the State were being deprived of honorarium and basic facilities and they demanded health benefits. Despite all the efforts, the government did not take any step or gave any assurance to resolve the issues since one and half year.

Noting the indifferent attitude of the government, the Union decided to launch indefinite strike. The ASHA workers were enrolled on a contractual basis under the National Rural Health Mission in 2005 to improve the delivery of basic health services.

Speaking to The Hans India, P Vijayalakshmi, president, Telangana Voluntary and Health Workers (ASHA) Union, said, "The West Bengal government gives a fixed salary Rs 1,800, while Kerala state gives Rs 1,000 and Haryana Rs 5,000. There is no such policy in Telangana State. Some of ASHA workers get as low as Rs 400 to Rs 2,000 a month.
