New Delhi: It is good news for Telangana State government as the Finance Department has decided to clear the proposal for the water grid works in the Cantonment areas of Hakimpet and Secunderabad. The Godavari water pipeline works has been proposed to the Centre by the State government for supplying drinking water to the State capital.

Telangana State Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao and TRS MPs made repeated pleas to the Defence Ministry and the Finance Ministry in this regard. It is learnt that the Defence Ministry finally sent the proposals to the Finance Ministry for cost estimates. In the next week, the Finance Ministry would send back a detailed note on the same to the Defence Secretary who would then be clearing the proposal.

The State government would proceed with the plans next. The special representative of the Telangana State government here, Ramachandru Tejawat, who met the Defence Secretary Mohan Kumar on Friday morning, was hopeful that the Central clearance would help the government fulfil the long-pending demand by the people in Hyderabad and Secunderabad cities for additional drinking water.

The Secunderabad Cantonment was hit by water problem for years. The age-old water distribution network and inadequate supply by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) were some of the reasons for inadequacies. The Secunderabad Cantonment’s water requirement stands at 53 to 55 lakh gallons per day but the HMWS&SB supplies around 46 lakh gallons per day.

Recently, supply of additional four lakh gallons per day started after Krishna Phase III became operational but only Mahendra Hills to Karkhana areas were being benefitted leaving large areas, such as Bowenpally, Bolaram and Alwal, uncovered.
