Hyderabad: The PIL bench of the High Court at Hyderabad comprising acting Chief Justice Dilip Bhosale and Justice SV Bhatt on Monday voiced concern at the growing influence of the ‘sand mafia’ and the approach of the Andhra Pradesh government in the matter. The bench voiced its disappointment at the manner in which the government pleader was defending the matter without any preparation.

The bench is dealing with a PIL filed by Sunkra Gangaraju, questioning the inaction of the government in taking measures and steps to prevent illegal sand mining and transportation of sand from Prakkilanka village of West Godavari district. The petitioner complained in the PIL that there was illegal mining operations by using heavy machinery, dredging boats, heavy capacity lorries, etc.

Earlier, the bench had summoned the District Collector to be present before the court. At the end of the hearing of the matter when the case was adjourned for the government to come up with proper details, the government pleader made an unsuccessful attempt to have the presence of the official dispensed with for the future hearing.

The bench refused the same and said that the officer must be present at the next hearing. The bench repeatedly told the government pleader that the government seems to have lost sight of the fact that water and the other natural resources were also for the next generation and it could not be abused by the mafia.
