Hyderabad: Noted poet and writer Dr Ammangi Venugopal will be the first recipient of Kaloji Smaraka Purskaram award to be presented on the eve of Kaloji birth anniversary on September 9.

With Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao being on an official tour in China, Deputy Chief Minister Kadiyam Srihari will honour him at an official programme to be held at Ravindra Bharathi on Wednesday.

It may be mentioned here that Rao earlier announced that Kaloji birthday would be celebrated as Telangana Language Day. Accordingly, official programmes are lined up in 10 districts and also the State capital on this occasion.

Venugopal, hailing from Vikarabad in Ranga Reddy district, was born in 1948. He worked as a lecturer in Government Junior and Degree Colleges in Karimnagar, Medak, Nalgonda and Mahabubnagar districts before retiring as Principal in 2004. Venugopal’s anthology of poetry includes Minugurulu (1980), Paccha Bottu-Patan Cheru (1999), Bharosa (2008) and Gandham Chettu (in publishing).

He wrote several plays, short stories, literary essays, besides doing translation and research work. The acclaimed writer is presently on Telugu Advisory Board of Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi He was awarded Pratibha Puraskaram by Telugu University in 2001.
