Hyderabad: In a significant development, TJAC chairman professor Kodandaram has filed an impleading petition in High Court on spate of farmers suicides in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

He approached Court on behalf of Telangana Vidyavanthula Vedika (TVV). Kodandaram along with retired professor L Jalapathi Rao from Rythu JAC filed the petition that was admitted by the Court.

Speaking to The Hans India, Kodandaram pointed out that this was ‘God sent opportunity’ for them to seek justice for the depressed farming community.

He said the farmers were deep in debts and justice was not being done to them. People dying anywhere is a blur on society.

Suicides have to stop and we have drawn the attention towards our findings on how to stop the suicides.

All the recommendations that were thrown up during various round table conferences were compiled and submitted to the court.

He said a PIL is an effort to solve a problem through joint efforts. Suicides should stop and agriculture should become profitable, he added.

When asked why he chose to file implead petition on on behalf of TVV instead of JAC, he said the TVV has lot of information and findings over farmers suicides. All those details were submitted to the Court.

Nearly 28,000 farmers took to the extreme step of committing suicide and this has been brought to the notice of the court. Also non implementation of Swaminathan recommendations on guarding MSP to farmers,

lack of regulation on seed companies, not taking enough steps in drought affected areas among others were also highlighted in the petition.

Explaining the reasons for the decision, Kodandaram stated that they felt this as a responsibility being concerned individuals in the society.

This is an endeavour to come to the rescue of farmers, he said. He said he would continue to work for the benefit of the farmers.

The Telangana Vidyavanthula Vedika and Rythu Swarajya Vedika earlier tried to implead in Supreme Court in case concerning solutions to agrarian crisis in the country.

However, it could not materialize then, he pointed out.
