Trial run of the Godavari Phase-I water supply project to the city has hit a roadblock yet again. On Sunday, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) noticed a major water leak from pipes at Bommakal village to Mallaram village in Karimnagar district. HMWS&SB had successfully run stage-1 of Godavari Phase-I on October 23 but a 54 kilometre pipeline from Mumur to Bommakal faced a leakage.

According to a Board official, the issue would be sorted out by Monday and the trial run would continue. He explained that the run would be carried in four stages from Mumur to Bommakal in stage one, Bommakal to Mallaram stage two, Mallaram to Kondapaka in stage three and Kondapaka to Ghanpur of Ranga Reddy district in stage four.

The Water Board official said that once the project is completed, it is expected to draw 172 million gallons per day (MGD), taking the total water supply to Hyderabad city to 600 MGD. It would benefit about 20 lakh people in the twin cities, he added.

The HMWS&SB is also hopeful that the four stage Godavari Phase-I trial would be completed in a month and the city is expected to receive water supply from December 15.
