Hyderabad: Air pollution levels in Hyderabad shot up a few notches during Diwali with Kukatpally being affected the most. The quantity of air pollutants in the city reached dangerously high levels on Thursday. The dust levels rose alarmingly in Kukatpally and Pragathi Nagar areas.

The Telangana State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB) conducted tests to assess air and noise pollution before and as well as during Diwali festival on November 5 and November 11. The TSPCB monitored limited parameters like particulate matter and gases pollutants such as sulphur dioxide, nitrous oxide, carbon monoxide and ammonia.

The PM10 levels increased compared to the pre-Deepavali day at some places like Kukatpally, Balanagar, Charminar, Punjagutta, Zoo Park, etc. The values of SO2 and NOx also increased at certain places. This was due to bursting of fire crackers.

The Respirable Suspended Particulate Matter (RSPM) levels increased alarmingly at Kukatpally from 220 to 412 micro grams per cubic meter 259(µg/m3), Balanagar 183 to 259µg/m3, Charminar 120 to 295µg/m3, Jeedimetla from 106 to 205µg/m3, Jubilee Hills from 58 to 171µg/m3. “Gases are within the limits i.e., average of SO2 4.9 to 13.3µg/m3 (Kukatpally highest), NOx 18 to 36µg/m3 maximum at Balanagar and Uppal & Kukatpally (35 – 36µg/m3)n said N Raveendhar, senior social scientist, TSPCB.

The noise levels increased at Abids (75 to 83), JNTU (69 to 73), Punjagutta (80 to 83), Pragathinagar (52 to 79.4), Uppal (69 to 78dB(A)). According to PCB officials the air and noise pollution levels increased three-fold in densely populated and commercial areas in the city.

Health experts said that the elderly in particular are vulnerable to air pollution. Both PM 10 and PM2.5 particles cause health problems and can have drastic affect on respiratory health.
