Khammam: For the first time in Khammam district, a divorce was granted to a couple by a judge through Skype.

According to reports, after hearing one of the petitioners who is living in United States of America over Skype, Senior Civil Judge M Venkataramana granted the divorce to the couple here in Khammam.

Kiran Kumar and Pavani, residents of Khammam, got married in March 2012. But after a few days, Pavani lodged a dowry harassment case on Kiran Kumar and his parents. Elders from both the families had settled the issue at that time.

But Kiran, who was not interested in sustaining the relationship, had filed for divorce in June 2012 in Civil Court of Khammam (through his lawyer K Babji). By then Pavani had left to America for higher studies giving the ‘General Power of Attorney’ to her father.

A divorce can only be granted when both the husband and wife give their consent in court in the presence of a judge. Since Pavani had no time to come to India and give her opinion directly to the court, her lawyer (Basava Punnaiah) appealed to the court to hear her concerns through Skype.

Accepting the appeal made by Pavani’s lawyer, the court recorded the Pavani’s statement. Later, Senior Civil Judge M Venkataramana granted divorce to the couple.
