Hyderabad: Following huge outcry on the claims of the GHMC with regard to the BC figures by various BC organisations, new GHMC commissioner B Janardhan Reddy ordered re-examination of the report. The civic body has now put the correct percentage of BCs at 26.22.

Interestingly, all this is said to be happening even as the TRS wants to have a BC as the next Mayor of the GHMC. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) seems to have underestimated the Backward Class (BC) population in the city limits in its report. The civic body failed to do a scientific evaluation of the BC voters.

According to the Integrated Household Survey conducted by the Telangana government, the BC population is 51 percent. Out of which, 35 percent are in Hyderabad district and 45 percent in Ranga Reddy district. But according to the first report prepared by the GHMC, there are only 21 percent BCs.

About 31 percent of total Muslim population in the state lives in Hyderabad. Of them, 80 percent were included in BC-E category. The GHMC has also removed voters by 10 percent in divisions like Charminar and Bahadurpura, the areas where Muslim population is high, CPI (M) city secretary M Srinivas alleged.

The BC welfare associations in Telangana cry foul over the reduction in the number of their voters in Hyderabad, when their population has relatively increased compared to the previous census.

Telangana BC welfare association national president R Krishnaiah termed the BC enumeration as bogus and also alleged that the GHMC has not included the Muslims in the BC category. The government in 2004 conducted a multipurpose house hold survey, in which it had identified about 48 percent BC voters. And again in 2009, the GHMC has identified 29 percent voters in which it excluded about 18 castes from the Muslim community, he added.

The BC leader further stated that the BC ratio will increase with the population. But according to the GHMC report, it has gone down at least by 4 percent in two years. The officials were not conducting door-to-door survey, he alleged. How can the GHMC officials show BC population is just 26 percent when the reserved percentage for them is 34 in the Corporation, he pointed out. He accused the GHMC officials of doing undue favour to the government. He alleged that the Corporation has only conducted a sample survey and the accurate figure cannot be obtained by this way.
