The middlemen in the district are looting the gullible cotton farmers by creating a fear among them. Khammam: The middlemen in the district are looting the gullible cotton farmers by creating a fear among them. They would tell them that their cotton produce would not be purchased by the officials at the agricultural market yard as it has become wet in the recent heavy rains. Believing them, the innocent farmers are selling the cotton to the middlemen, thus, incurring losses.
Cotton ready for sale in Khammam district
Taking some shutters on rent in the mandal headquarters across the district, some of the middlemen were found cheating the farmers coming from the villages to sell their produce at the Cotton Corporation Centres and purchasing it from them at a cheaper price. The middlemen are also cheating the farmers by using faulty weighing machines.

The Additional Director of District Agricultural Marketing Department Vinod Kumar said, “The government will pay Rs.4,100 per one quintal of the cotton which contains 8 per cent of moisture. The price will be decreased to Rs 41 for every one percent increase of moisture in the cotton above the 8 percent. And the cotton which contains the moisture content of more than 12 percent will not be purchased.”

The farmers of Yellandu are facing problems in transporting their produce to Khammam for selling, since there is no purchasing centre at Yellandu. Taking this as an advantage, the middlemen are buying the cotton at a low price in the mandal headquarters of Tekulapalli, Kamepalli, Yellandu, Bayyaram and Garla.

Speaking to The Hans India here on Saturday, Bhukya Ramulu, said that they had no other option except to sell their produce to the middlemen.“After spending lot of money in transporting the cotton to the CCI centres which are located at distant places, many farmers were disappointed as the officials refused to purchase it. But the middlemen readily purchased the cotton from them for Rs. 3,000 to Rs 3,300 without bothering much about the moisture content. So we are happy to sell our produce to the middlemen.”

Meanwhile, one of the market yard officials said even after persuading the farmers to bring the cotton to the market yard or to the CCI Centres for selling, they were reluctant to do so.

He lamented that the farmers were blinding following the middlemen.

The district general secretary of ‘Telangana Rythu Sangham’ Nunna Nageshwar Rao said, “The officials are not purchasing the cotton owing to the presence of moisture content in it. Taking advantage, the middlemen are cheating the poor farmers and purchasing the cotton for Rs 3,200 to 3,300 per one quintal due to which many farmers are incurring huge losses. The policy of the present government will destroy the agriculture and force the farmers to take up other means of livelihood.”

He demanded the government to pay MSP of Rs.7,500 per one quintal of cotton. He also said that it was the responsibility of the officials of the marketing department to take care of the cotton produce which had been brought to the market for selling.
