Annakut fete at cow shelter

Hyderabad: South India’s biggest cow shelter- Satyam Shivam Sundaram Gau Nivas - at Peddammagadda in Gaganpahad on the outskirts of the city organised Annakut celebration ‘Annakut-Prasad’ on Sunday.

Speaking on the occasion, Dharam Raj Ranka of the Gau Nivas said the Annakut festival was celebrated at the beginning of New Year and lots of variety of food items prepared with love and devotion were offered to God.

Some 5,000 devotees participated in the celebrations. As part of Diwali celebrations, Hindus around the world cook a variety of vegetarian items of food, snacks, sweets, pickles and delicacies as offerings to God.

Traditionally Annakut symbolised devotion through offering the first harvest and distributing this to all. Ranka said they started the cow shelter in 2001 with 200 cows and now looked after 5,000 cows.
