A showdown between student organisations seems to be on the cards in Osmania University. The proposed ‘beef festival’ by Democratic Cultural Forum (DCF) has already created enough controversy. Now, a group of students, claimed to be from Osmania University Joint Action Committee (OU JAC), has decided to hold ‘pandi kura pandaga’ or ‘pork festival’.

Hyderabad: A showdown between student organisations seems to be on the cards in Osmania University.
The DCF had already announced that it would hold ‘beef festival’ at University College of Arts and Social Sciences on December 10 and OU JAC members also wants to organise pork festival at the same venue and day.
The students in the university feel that the proposed festivals may trigger violence, disrupting the otherwise serene environment. “There is no prohibition on eating pork. We want to create awareness among the people that consuming pork is healthy. December 10 is International Human Rights Day and hence we want to organise the festival. We are not opposing the beef festival nor we support it,” said Solanki Srinivas, president, OUJAC and convener of the pork festival.
The OU JAC claimed that 35 student organisations had extended their support for the pork festival. The JAC plans to serve about 2 to 3 quintals of pork by cooking it as fry, curry and biryani for about 5,000 members who are expected to attend the festival. To step up the campaign for the festival, the orangisers have hit the social media like facebook and are forwarding messages through instant messaging app WhatsApp. Further, they decided to campaign in all the universities to bring in large number of students for the festival. That apart, the member of the OU JAC intends to invite leaders of the all political parties including the BJP, TDP, MIM and Congress for the festival.
“We do not oppose nor support the pork festival. But we are in support of the beef festival and we will participate in it,” said Md Younus, president, Minorities Students Organisation.
Meanwhile, intelligence sources say that ABVP activists who are against beef festival want to hold pork festival in the name of OU JAC.
In 2012, the university witnessed violence over beef festival organised by the Dalit Student Forum. Intelligence sources say that there is every possibility that clashes happen between student groups.
