Karimnagar: ‘Bathukamma’, a new paddy variety seed, developed by the Regional Agriculture Research Station (RARS), Polasa of Jagtial mandal, is attracting the farming community. Farmers from different parts of the State and adjacent Andhra Pradesh are visiting the research station to purchase the seed to cultivate the most profitable verity in their lands in the present Rabi season.

The Regional Agricultural Research Station scientists have developed ‘JGL 18047’ variety paddy seed, which was named after the traditional festival of the women folk of Telangana. The seed was released in Hyderabad recently.

Farmers have been attracted to Bathukamma as there are two advantages with the new variety. One is to get 8 to 10 per cent more yield from this seed than that from the old variety and another is less dropping of grains, Research Station scientists said.

One of the scientists said that farmers of both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh states have been cultivating MTU 1010 variety and getting 35 to 40 quintal yield per acre. There is a possibility to get 40 to 45 quintals more yield if they cultivate the new varieties, he informed.
