Hyderabad: The notification for the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections, to be held first in the State after the formation of Telangana, is likely to be issued on December 24.

With indications available to this effect, the government and the GHMC are gearing up for the elections. According to TRS sources, they had conducted a survey on the poll prospects of the party and had assessed its strength and weakness. According to the survey report, TRS is strong in about 80 out of 150 divisions.

In view of this, government has decided to speed up foundation stone laying ceremonies of the two-bedroom housing scheme for poor. IT and Panchayat Raj Minister K T Rama Rao along with several Ministers went on a foundation stone laying spree for 2BHK houses at various parts in the city since Thursday morning.

Speaking on the occasion, he said the State government was planning to construct 1.08 lakh 2BHK houses in the GHMC limits to realise the dream of ‘Hut-Free and Slum-Free’ city for Hyderabad. KTR said the GHMC was having around 1,450 slums and the State government has already identified land to construct double bedroom houses to replace those slums.

He said around 10,000 houses would be constructed this year, 25,000 next year and another 50,000 in the coming years and added a detailed plan was being chalked out to implement the proposal. KTR claimed that the TRS government has resolved the 30-year-old problem of power cuts, and assured that the State government would create more job avenues for the youth.

Deputy Chief Minister Mohammed Mahmood Ali said the State government has already issued 1.08 lakh pattas at free of cost. He also listed out several other schemes being implemented by the government for the welfare of poor. Home Minister Naini Narasimha Reddy said the government has waived Auto Transport Tax of nearly Rs 77 crore for the benefit of auto-drivers and also providing Rs 5 lakh insurance scheme.

GHMC Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy said the GHMC was striving its level best to increase the poll percentage in the forthcoming GHMC elections by taking up various publicity, awareness campaigns duly involving the RWAs and other organisations.
