Hyderabad: Transport Minister Mahender Reddy, Chairman Telangana Legislative Council Swami Goud and the Union Minister for Labour Bandaru Dattatreya have laid emphasis on the need for strict implementation of traffic rules, like wearing of helmet for two-wheeler riders and seat belt for four wheeler drivers.

Addressing a seminar organised by the Association of Transport Department Technical Officers (ATDTO) as a part of golden jubilee celebrations on Saturday, Mahender Reddy said “on an average about 7,000 road accidents in Telangana were taking place every year. The State government is according importance to campaign on road safety.”

K Swamy Goud felt that the vehicle manufacturers too should educate the vehicle owners on road safety. Opposing the Road Transport and Safety Bill 2014, Swamy Goud said, “Empowering private agencies with the responsibility of issuing driving licence, fitness certificate and registration of vehicles has the potential of being misused in the absence of control by the State government.”

He stressed the need to take measures to strengthen State government mechanism for better road safety, instead of repealing the existing Motor Vehicle Act 1988. Mahabubnagar MLA V Srinivas Goud said like civil police, Traffic Department officials should be provided with arms license in order to protect themselves.

He also demanded that the Centre withdraw the Road Transport and Safety Bill and urged the officers to collect signatures from all Transport Department Officials in the State, opposing it. RTA Commissioner Sandeep Kumar Sultania felt that the officials should educate people on road safety. He said about 25 percent of road accidents can be prevented instantly by wearing helmets.
