Hyderabad: In tune with the Supreme Court’s recent directions, the Telangana State government on Wednesday issued orders for the shifting of wine shops located below 100 metres on national and state highways.

Excise and Prohibition Commissioner R Chandravadan instructed the department officials to relocate the wine shops 500 metres to 1 km away from the highways. More than 100 licensed liquor outlets were opened along the highways and served liquor to people travelling on the busy roads.

Free availability of liquor on highways was one of the main reasons for increasing road accidents on highways in the recent years. The Supreme Court Empower committee on road safety had given time till December 31 to either remove or shift the wine shops on highways.
