Hyderabad: Deputy Chief Minister Kadiyam Srihari, who holds the Education portfolio, has said there is a good response from the rural areas for government English medium schools.
Addressing media persons after convening a meeting on new National Education policy with government and private school teachers at Sarva Siksha Abhiyan here on Thursday, the Minister said, “Majority of suggestions we have received are for English medium schools in the public sector.”
Srihari said the government had also received suggestions for segmenation of the schools basing on the classes. “The current segmentation is not practical. We have suggestions for changing the segmentation,” he added. The Minister said suggestions received from grass root levels were documented and would be submitted to
Central government.
The Minister said several high schools in the State were facing dearth of certain subject teachers. He stated that there were about 60 lakh students studying from class I to X in the State. Of the total, as many as 31 lakh students are in the private schools and 29 lakh in government schools. “While enrolment in private schools is increasing every year, the government schools are witnessing drop in students joining.
There is a need to strengthen government schools and save public schools system in the state,” he said.
Srihari appealed to the teacher community to come out of their comfort zone and give suggestions for drafting a new education policy.
He further said suggestions from various stakeholders and intellectuals would be taken on higher and university
education. During the meeting MLC P Ravinder urged the government to entrust the responsibility of recruiting school assistant posts to Telangana State Public Service Commission.
Ravinder said there was a need to introduce yoga as a subject in the school curriculum. He urged the government to give best teacher award by selecting teachers rather than calling applications.
