Hyderabad: Fourteen students chasing their college dream in the US have reportedly been deported after three days in jail after it emerged that the universities that had invited them were black-listed.

The students were brought to Delhi on Monday. On Saturday evening at Hyderabad's international airport, 19 other students were shocked as they were told that they would not be allowed on the Air India flight to San Francisco. The students were reportedly denied boarding passes even though they had valid visas.

Air India reportedly said they had orders not to allow them on the flight to the US as they had been invited by "black-listed universities".

India's flag carrier has said in a notice to its travel agents that those travelling on a student visa to San Francisco and heading to the Silicon Valley University at San Jose and North Western Polytechnic College, Fremont, were not to be given tickets as the universities are blacklisted. "Please inform all your staff and care to be taken while issuing the tickets," the airline said.

The students, crestfallen at being stopped at the last minute after months of anticipation, said that others like them going by private flights were allowed to travel.

Air India officials say they were following the advice of the US Customs and Border Protection and Immigration. They said since students had been deported from the US, preventing them from flying would save them harassment.
