Hyderabad: A notification for the conduct of elections to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation is set to be issued on December 27, the day when ‘Ayutha Maha Chandi Yagam’ under taken by Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao would end.

Sources said December last week is considered as ‘propitious’ in view of the yagam being performed by more than 3,000 priests for the well-being of the state. Against this background, it is assumed that the State Election Commission (SEC) may issue notification on December 27.

If that does not happen, then the SEC would issue the notification on December 28, the sources said. Though the wards reserved for women, BC, SC and ST communities in the GHMC are complete, the government is yet to make it public. While official sources say that they would be announced it almost simultaneously with the notification, legal experts say that it would not be proper to do so. The government has to announce the reserved wards before the notification is announced.

The sources also said that the long-pending civic body elections for Warangal and Khammam Municipal Corporations would be issued after Medaram Sammakka – Sarakka Jatara to be held from February 17 to 20 in Warangal district. Earlier, the SEC planned to issue a notification for the two urban bodies along with the GHMC. But, the government asked the commission to postpone the election in view of the big tribal festival.
