Speaking to media persons at the police headquarters on Wednesday, Superintendent of Police B Sumathi disclosed the details of the crime situation in the district. She said though murders have come down by 15 per cent and dacoit cases down by 55 per cent, robberies have increased up to 19 per cent.

Dowry deaths remained the same with 36 women dying in 2014 and 2015. Harassment towards women has increased and 29 rape cases have been reported in 2015. Kidnappings and road robberies have also slightly increased. Two murder cases involving sorcery have been detected involving 26 accused.

The number of fatal and non-fatal road accidents has remained moreover the same as compared to last year. However, the department has been able to file a record number of cases (1.3 lakh) on errant drivers collecting Rs 2.9 crore and 9,910 cases against drunken drivers, collecting Rs 1.28 crore. Thirty six black spots (highly accident prone zones) have also been identified across the district.

Two mega Lok Adalats have also been conducted, bringing 1,279 cases to a compromise. She gave kudos to SHE Teams for doing the best job in the State, giving counselling in 623 cases.

She revealed that Rs 4.9 crore was been spent for installing CCTV cameras on three national highways, which would be inaugurated shortly. She lauded the new initiatives like project SWAR to monitor petitions, centralised and group SMSes, free constable coaching for youngsters at three centres and empowering village police officers to perform more.
