Hyderabad: Stating that the recent spate of deportation of Indian students by the US government distressed students and their families, IT Minister K T Rama Rao urged the External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to initiate a dialogue with the US officials concerned and solve the problem at the earliest.

In a letter to the External Affairs Minister, the IT Minister stated that in the last two months, several students from Telangana State faced deportation despite having valid visas issued by the US Consulate. Traditionally, Hyderabad city had a maximum share in sending students and skilled workforce to the United States, he added.

He also pointed out that many of these students in India took loans to fund their education programme in the US universities and when the students were summarily deported to India their families passed through deep emotional and financial anguish.

“There seems to be lack of clarity on why the US authorities were resorting to highhanded methods to deport these hapless students. There have also been media reports stating that the students were maltreated by the US authorities. Therefore, I request you to initiate a dialogue with the US government heads concerned and explain them the distress caused to Indian citizens because of these unwarranted deportations,” he added.
