US VISA IMBROGLIO

Hyderabad: The Study USA counselors urged students to do a thorough research into courses and universities in the US before applying for admissions. In an interactive session with newspersons in American Corner at St Francis College for Women here on Thursday, Study USA national coordinator Renukha Raja Rao said students must do their own homework by browsing internet rather than blindly believing consultants.

Passing the buck onto the students over the deportation issue, she felt the students might not have gone through the university details in a proper way. It may be worth mentioning here that several students were deported from the US to India when they landed in the US to report to two Silicon Valley institutions.

Listing out steps for getting an admission into US universities, Renukha said the process of admission should start one year prior to the actual admission. “If a student wants to pursue master’s programme next year, the process has to begin this year only,” she added.

Renukha urged the students to research with regards to the courses and accreditation of the universities. Upon planning finances and course, the students should go for visa interview,
she said.

“Students should not assume that they can work and pay for the education in the US, which does not happen. They should be realistic and plan the finances for education,” she added. Renukha advised the students to view universities accreditation by browsing http://www.chea.org/, http://www.abet.org/ for engineering and technologies and http://www.aacsb.edu/ for management courses before they join.

On work permit for the student visa holders, she said the F1 visa holders were supposed to work if they held proper authorisation from the concerned university. US-India Educational Foundation Regional Officer Piya Bahadur said a toll number had been operationalised for the students for clarification on education in the US.
