Hyderabad: Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad continues to be a favourite hub for the gold smugglers based in Dubai. The customs officials at RGIA seized gold biscuits weighing 3.14 kg hidden under a seat in an Air India flight from Dubai on Sunday.

Despite the arrests and seizure of yellow metal in large quantities, smugglers remain undeterred and continue to try to smuggle gold into the city through RGIA. The officials on a tip-off that huge quantity of gold was being smuggled into Hyderabad from Dubai by a flight, carried out searches in the Air India flight and seized the gold.

The seizure was marked by a high drama. The Air India flight (AI 952) from Dubai landed at 9 am while it was scheduled to arrive at 5 am. As the search of luggage and passengers yielded no results, the Customs officials searched the aircraft. They found a bag abandoned under a seat in “S” row.

The officials were stunned to find gold biscuits in it. But the passenger or passengers, who carried the contraband, could not be traced. The officials said the bag contained 27 gold biscuits weighing 3.14 kg, according to Customs ACP N Priyanka.
