Hyderabad: After biting dust in the recently concluded Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections and party leaders respecting the people’s mandate on Saturday, some Congress leaders seem to be smelling a rat in the poll process that led to the landslide victory of the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS).
Making a direct reference of a possible tinkering of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in the GHMC elections, Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) chief official spokesperson Dasoju Sravan Kumar and former GHMC Mayor Banda Karthika Reddy, who lost the election from Tarnaka Division, accused the TRS government of tampering with the EVMs to win 100 seats.
Speaking to the media at Gandhi Bhavan here on Sunday, Sravan and Karthika Reddy questioned how IT Minister K T Rama Rao repeatedly proclaimed that his party would win 100 divisions. Questioning as to why the Election Commission removed NOTA option from the voting machines, they expressed doubts that the ruling party would resort to tampering of EVMs in Narayankhed Assembly by-election as well. They asked the Election Commission to explain under what law they dispensed with NOTA option to the voters in the GHMC elections.
Demanding that the government conduct Narayankhed Assembly by-election through ballot or insert printer to EVMs as practised throughout the country, they reminded that printers were used in EVMs in Delhi and Bihar elections too. Expressing surprise over the win of TRS candidates in the Congress, TDP and BJP bastions, Sravan and Karthika said no vote to Independent candidates in some divisions could be the best evidence to say that irregularities had taken place in EVMs.
The Congress is conducting party candidates’ meeting at Gandhi Bhavan on Monday. Sravan and Karthika Reddy made it clear that they would collect opinions of the candidates on the irregularities in EVMs division-wise.
