Hyderabad: The groundwater levels have significantly increased in several areas where desilting of tanks has been carried out over the last one year under Mission Kakatiya. This information was shared by the State Groundwater Department after submitting relevant data collected by it to the Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao here on Thursday.

  • Mission Kakatiya works increased groundwater levels
  • The data showed considerable increase in groundwater levels in the areas where works completed

Analysis of the groundwater level data collected from 70 water basins in Nalgonda, Nizamabad, Ranga Reddy and Mahabubnagar indicates that groundwater levels have considerably increased in the areas where tanks have been restored. Despite the poor monsoon, the restoration of water tanks has helped the increase of ground water levels.

Officials informed the minister that a rise in groundwater levels would help in addressing drinking water crisis in at least some areas this summer. The minister instructed the officials to complete Phase-I of works Mission Kakatiya by March 31 and begin the second phase works from April without delaying the tenders.

As many as 10,000 tanks would be revived under Phase-II. The minister wanted the tenders for the second phase works to be finalised in consultation with farmers and local people representatives to avoid any discrepancies. The minister said he would tour all the districts and inspect works after March. Mission Kakatiya was launched for the restoration of tanks and water bodies in more than 25,000 habitations across the State.
