Hyderabad: The thorny issue of closure of Army roads is back to square one. This is the conclusion that emanated in the board meeting of Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB), which was held here on Saturday. When Ward member 5, J Ramakrishna raised the issue of the road closure, the SCB president Brig A S Negi refused to budge saying that the Local Army Authority (LMA) was the sole authority of A1 lands.

The SCB seems to be firm about its decision to close the roads; however, it is pitching for a solution by suggesting the construction of alternative roads. The CEO of SCB, Sujatha Gupta informed the board members that the Army was willing to provide land on the periphery from Ramakrishnapuram till Mahendra Hills.

In the month of January, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) conducted a survey from Safilguda to Mahendra Hills. However, the progress has been scant. Army officials were of the opinion that the GHMC needs to be proactive and that there was a need for a joint survey so that the work can be taken up more seriously.

Talking about the transparency in SCB communications with the Minister of Defense, Gupta said that the contrary to reports in certain sections of the media that the SCB was hiding January 7, 2015, letter from the Ministry of Defense on reopening public roads in the cantonment, the SCB has in fact sent 36 reports to the Ministry of Defense.
