Hyderabad: The Telangana State government is likely to review the controversial GO 111 after a case pending with High Court is disposed of. The GO (issued on March 8, 1996) prohibits various developments within 10 km radius of Himayatsagar and Osmansagar lake areas, which are main sources of drinking water supply as per the recommendation of the expert committee constituted by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board to suggest ways and means to monitor the quality of water in these reservoirs.

According to the GO, major industries, hotels and residential structures should not be constructed in the 84 listed villages that fall in six mandals -- Shamshabad, Moinabad, Shabad, Shankarpally, Rajendranagar and Chevella. Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao gave this assurance at a public meeting on Friday where he informed that he would remove 'un-wanted' villages from the purview of GO 111.

He said, “Many villages have been included in GO 111. Some are wanted and some are not needed to be included in the GO. There is a case in High Court and it is at the final stage. We will take steps to remove villages which are not needed to be included in the purview of GO 111,” said KCR.

The Chief Minister's statement gave a ray of hope to hundreds of farmers in Rangareddy district who have been cribbing that they were not being allowed to develop their land for the purpose of real estate because of the stringent restrictions in place.

Observers feel that the Chief Minister's assurance could see a spurt in real estate activity in the catchment areas of the twin reservoirs -- Osmansagar and Himayatsagar, which fall under the jurisdiction of Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority. These areas have not seen any real estate activity as there is prohibition on developing layouts.

The GO allows developments only in the clearly demarcated 'residential use' zone where 60% of the total area must be kept as open space and roads in all layouts in the villages of catchment area.Even Chevella MP Konda Vishveshwar Reddy had in his election campaign promised to abolish the GO, which was endorsed by the CM at a public meeting in Chevella.
