Hyderabad: The Telangana State Wakf Board would soon be filing a criminal case against a ‘fake’ Mutawalli, who has been accused of collecting Rs 30 lakh per year as rent from tenants of Wakf property at Madinaguda Masjid in Miyapur. After waking up to the situation after almost 15 years, the Wakf Board has decided to take into possession the remaining 1.5 acre of the 8-acre land parcel on the premises of the mosque along with more than 20 shops.
It has decided to serve notices to encroachers on 6.5 acres. The scam at this land parcel in Survey number 213, 214 & 215 under Serilingampally Mandal came to the notice of the higher officials of the Wakf Board recently with the help of an NGO. The board which immediately sent a team of officials to survey the area found that the 8-acre land parcel that belonged to the Wakf Board was encroached upon by vested interests where huge buildings and commercial establishments have come up in the recent years.
According to official sources, a fake Mutawalli, Mohammed Khan allegedly started collecting huge money as rent from shops attached to the mosque. Preliminary enquiries revealed that the fake Mutawalli was allegedly collecting Rs 2 to 2.5 lakh each month as rent from tenants.
“The report has come and notices will be issued shortly. A criminal case will be filed against the so-called Mutawalli,” said the source. According to the tenants of small shops, Rs 4,000 to Rs 12,000 per month was being collected by a person named Mohammed Khan for the past 15 years, who is in fact an employee of an international agriculture research institute in the city.
“We are helpless as he regularly visits the place in the evening claiming to be the Mutawalli,” said a tenant. Meanwhile, the NGO ‘Save Wakf Properties Association’ has demanded the Wakf Board that they call for fresh tenders after notices are served on the tenants. It demanded that the rent for each of the shops be made on a par with the market value so that the wakf board gets benefitted.
“Generally wakf quotes less rent, compared to the market value. We demand that the rents must be on a par with the market value,” said Syed Iftequar Hussaini, general secretary, Save Wakf Properties Association. During the recent months, Wakf Board officials have issued notices and stopped registrations of illegal encroachments at MM Pahadi in Attapur, stalled illegal constructions adjacent to Masjid Nana Bagh in Basheerbagh and took possession of Wakf properties in several locations in Khammam town.
