Warangal: Eight TRS rebel candidates’ winning the Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation elections has come as a surprise for the pink party. The rebels who won included B Kavitha (Division 4), N Swarnalatha (Division 13), Sharadha Joshi (Division 15), B Srilekha (Division 35), S Sunil Kumar (Division 46), G Raju (Division 54), K Sarotham Reddy (Division 55) and N Jhansi Lakshmi (Division 56) defeated TRS official candidates by a close margin.

In many other divisions too, the rebels gave good competition before the TRS candidates could overtake them with just a few votes. The TRS had expelled over 30 members from the party for filing nominations against the party’s official candidates. With the rebels winning in eight wards, it is to be seen if the TRS takes them back into its fold or not. If they rejoin the party, the TRS total strength in the GWMC will go up to 52 out of the total 58 divisions.

According to the rebel candidates, the public have seen them also as the TRS workers even though they contested without the party symbol. Since the beginning, the rebels have campaigned that they were the real candidates and after winning the election they would be again part of the TRS.

Sharada Joshi who won in the 15th division in Warangal (East) defeating the TRS candidate Munawar Unnisa Begum told The Hans India that though the party had denied the ticket, public saw her as TRS worker and voted her. Another rebel winner N Swarnalatha said, “I and my husband Bhasker worked for the party since its inception.

I was denied a ticket but public are aware of the work we did for the party and accepted us giving victory in the election.” It is said that at many places the local MLAs and the party leadership came under many pressures while distributing the tickets. As a result tickets were denied to long-time workers. Those who were denied tickets were compelled to contest as rebels and that led to lot of chaos in the TRS electioneering.

On the other hand, the TRS district leadership felt that the rebels had the support of local TRS leaders in their respective divisions. “We learnt that some seniors in the party have supported the rebels. This would be taken to the notice of Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao,” said party district president T Ravinder Rao while speaking to The Hans India on Wednesday. “The party high command is serious about the issue of rebels and there is no possibility of allowing them to rejoin the party,” Ravinder Rao said while responding on the possibility of allowing the rebels to rejoin the party.
