Hyderabad: The statement made by MIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi that he would not say ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ even if a knife was put to his throat has created ripples among the political circles. A city court on Wednesday ordered the police to book a case against MIM chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi for his remarks on Bharat Mata.

Hyderabad MP’s unwillingness to chant the slogan has not gone down well with nationalists and activists

Responding to a private petition filed by an advocate Sai Goud at Malkajgiri Munsif Magistrate Court, the judge issued the orders to Neredmet police to book Owaisi under Section 153-A of IPC for making a statement that could potentially disturb the integrity of the country and fuel enmities among people.

It may be mentioned here that recently Asaduddin Owaisi, while speaking at a public meeting in Maharashtra, said he would not say ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ even if a knife was put to his throat. He was retaliating to a recommendation by Mohan Bhagwat for nationalist and patriotic slogans to be encouraged at universities.

Following the line taken by Owaisi, a member of MIM in Maharashtra legislature also refused to say ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ and was suspended from the Assembly. Other parties unanimously backed the action against him. The political recriminations come after the arrest of Kanhaiya Kumar, a student at Delhi's Jawaharal Nehru University, on charges of sedition which escalated into a huge debate over whether the government is trying to crush dissent and impede free speech among campuses.

After an MIM member of the Maharashtra Assembly, Waris Pathan, questioned spending money on memorials, he was asked by a Shiv Sena legislator if he respected patriots and would say ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’. Pathan then said the slogan was not mentioned in the Constitution and that his party members were willing to say ‘Jai Hind’ instead.

Seeking action against Owaisi for refusing to chant ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’, RSS on Wednesday said those who did not consider India as their ‘motherland’ should leave the country. “He (Owaisi) is making such unwarranted statements. If somebody does not consider our country as motherland, he is most welcome to go away from this country and go wherever he likes,” RSS Prant Sang Chalak, Jammu and Kashmir, Brig Suchet Singh said.

Meanwhile MIM reacted to Rajya Sabha MP Javed Akhtar’s speech in Parliament on free speech and Owaisi’s challenge to the RSS that he would never say ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’. “By commenting on the cap worn by Owaisi sahab, Javed Akhtar Sahab has insulted Muslims of not only India but the world,” said Waris Pathan.

Akhtar took on Owaisi without naming him and said, “There is one man who thinks that he is a national leader, but in reality he is only a leader in an area in the city of Hyderabad, in one of India's States.”
