A two judge bench of the High Court at Hyderabad comprising Acting Chief Justice Dilip B Bhosale and Justice P Naveen Rao on Monday adjourned by three weeks a petition seeking elections to the Water Users Associations. The bench was dealing with a petition filed by YSR Congress Party MLA Kona Raghupathi.

The petitioner complained that elections to the Water Users Associations (WUAs), Distributaries Committees (DCs) and Project Committees (PCs) were not being conducted. The government informed the court that a team was constituted to visit the other states and study how the farmers were being made party to maintenance of irrigation works in a democratic way.

The petitioner complained that the elections were not being held and that the government had issued an order forming Organisations and Committees by consensus, instead of conducting elections, which amounted to replacing an ad hoc body with another ad hoc body.

The bench directed the State government to complete the process quickly and directed the government to conduct the elections and adjourned the matter.
